Song Sung Blue - Neil Diamond

SPEAKER_08

Song, song blue, everybody knows warm. Song, song blue, every garden grows warm. Me and you are subject to the blues now and name. But when you take a blues and make a song, you sing them out again, you sing em out again. Song, song, blue, weeping like a willow. Song, so blue, sleeping on my pillow Find a thing, but you can sing it with a cry in your voice. And before you know it, get the feeling good. It's stumbling got no choice and you subject to them. When you take the blues and make a stone, you swing them out again. Speaking of it for him, stop feeling good.

SPEAKER_00

And that was Song Sung Blue by Neil Diamond

Intro

SPEAKER_00

from his 1972 album, Moods. My name is Lauren. I'd like to welcome you to this brand new podcast called Liner Notes. I'd also like to thank my brother Lance for unwittingly giving me the idea for the name. Thank you, Lance. I appreciate that. This particular episode is called Open A Vein. The most depressing hit of the 1970s. It all came about by accident. Actually, it was a Facebook compost, which kind of ran among. There were several, several different people that contributed all kinds of different songs. Um I'd like to share credit where credit is due, and if you hate this, I would like to share the people that you should blame. Uh one of them obviously was me. Also involved was Todd Bonshire, uh, my friend Bruce Van Dell, also Pat Criow. I know there were quite a few other people involved, but I don't happen to remember them just now. But uh for those of you unnamed co-conspirators, I would like to say thank you, thank you very much. We're gonna start off here with a cover of a song by a band called Badfinger. Now, Badfinger is mostly known for their hit Come and Get It. That song was written by Paul McCartney. It is done by a gentleman called Harry Nielsen from his album Nilsen, released in 1971. It went to number one, and it is called Without You. Just an interesting side note. One of the surviving original members of Badfinger, Joey Nulland, actually lives to this day in Minneapolis. So there you have Badfinger, Nilsen, Minneapolis, and Paul McGarty. And you are just one of the many services that I provide. After that, we have a tune by Brad called It Don't Matter to Me. When we started this out, we had like three or four different songs for Bread that were mentioned, and quite frankly, it was so depressing that I hadn't cut them all out except this one. This one got to number ten on the charts. It is from their uh 1970 debut album. After that, we have James Taylor, Fire and Rain from the Sweet Baby James album. Surprisingly, uh this one only went to number three. I thought that it went higher than that. The first portion of the song is about the suicide of a childhood friend. Now, the middle portion of the song is about his struggles with drug addiction, uh, fame, etc. The last portion of the song is about the demise of his uh first band called Flying Machine. After that, we have what I feel is kind of an underrated group, uh, The Carpenters. It's called Rainy Days and Mondays. This one went to number two, it's from their debut album called The Carpenters, and we'll finish out the set with Carol King, a tune from her mega, mega super hit album Tapestry. Uh it's called It's Too Late from 1971. It went to number one. The odd thing though is that this is the B side of the single. The A side of the single was called I Feel the Earth Move, and that also went to number one. A little bit of an oddity. However, we're starting off with Harry Nielsen's version of Without You.

Without You - Harry Nilsson

SPEAKER_08

Your face is you were leaving, but I guess that's just the way the story goes. You always smile, but in your eyes, you'll sound sure. Yes, it's true. No, I can't forget tomorrow when I think of myself, when I had you feel, then I let you go. I can't, I can't give anymore. I can't get more Well, I can't forget the scene of your face as you believe, but I guess that's just the way the story goes. You always smile when you grind your song.

It Don't Matter to Me - Bread

SPEAKER_08

Time to go out searching for yourself, hoping to find time to go to find it. If you take up with some one who's better than me. Cause your happiness is all alone. For you to find your peace of mind. But they wanna be the only one. How many came before? It really doesn't matter just as long as you're the best. Everybody moving on tryna find out what's been listening to the best. It don't matter to me if your searching brings you back together with me. Cause they'll always be in the room waiting for you. Waiting for me, don't hide waiting for me.

SPEAKER_06

Suzanne, the plans they may put an end to you.

Fire and Rain - James Taylor

SPEAKER_06

I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song. I just can't remember who to send it to. I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend. But I always thought that I'd see you again. Don't you look down upon me, Jesus? You gotta help me make a stand. You just got to see me through another day. My body's aching, and my time is at hand. I won't make it any other way. Whoa, I've seen fire, I've seen rain, seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend. But I always thought that I'd see you again. To an easy time, my back turned towards the sun. No knows when the cold wind blows, it'll turn your head around. Well, as hours of time on a telephone line to talk about things to come, sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground. Whoa, I've seen fire and I've seen rain, I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again. Thought I'd see you one more time again. There's just a few things coming my way this time around.

Rainy Days and Mondays - The Carpenters

SPEAKER_02

Feeling like I don't belong, walking around some kind of lonely cloud. Rainy days and Mondays always get me down. Run and find the one who loves me. What I feel is coming gone before. No need to talk it out. We know what it's all about. Hanging around. Rainy days months always get me down. Funny, but it seems that it's the only thing to do. Run and find the one who loves me. What I feel is coming gone for. No need to talk it out. We know what it's all about. Hang in a ride. Nothing to do but cry. Rainy days funders always get me down.

unknown

Hang in a ride.

It's Too Late - Carole King

SPEAKER_03

Just to pass the time. There's something wrong here that can be no denying. One of us is changing, or maybe we just stopped trying.

SPEAKER_08

And it's too late, baby. Now it's too late.

SPEAKER_03

Something inside has died, and I can't hide, and I just can't fake it. Oh, no, no. It used to be so easy living here with you. You were light and crazy, and I knew just what to do. Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like ooh.

SPEAKER_08

And it's too late, baby. Now it's too late. So we really did try to make it. Something inside has died and I can't.

SPEAKER_07

How did I just can't make it? Oh no, no.

SPEAKER_03

Subject They'll be good times again for me and you But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it too? Still I'm glad for what we had and how I want to But it's too late, baby now, it's too late.

SPEAKER_08

So we really did try to make it something inside us died and acting hide and I just can't take it. It's too late. Never darling, it's too late.

SPEAKER_00

It's

Break

SPEAKER_00

too late indeed. Coming up next, we have Don McClain, but not the song you think it is. From the American Pie album, it's called Vincent Went to number twelve, and it's often erroneously referred to as Starry Starry Night. It's like I said, called Vincent, obviously about Vincent Van Gogh, written from the point of view of his brother Theo. After that, we have Gilbert O'Sullivan with Alone Again naturally. Now, if you listen to this closely, the guy gets left at the altar, both of his parents die, and he's considering suicide by throwing himself off of a cliff. You gotta die going for you. After that, we have Tanya Tucker with Adult Dawn. This is a single released in 1972, and as far as the Billboard Top 100 goes, it only made it to number 72, however, on the Billboard Country Chart. It made it to number six, which is why I've included it here. And this was written by uh a guy called Larry Collins and another one called Alex Harvey, and it was about the possible suicide of Harvey's mother. Now, this is crazy. It was originally recorded by Bette Midler for her debut album. Also, Helen Reddy had a hit with it later in 1972. It was a number one hit for her. I've included the uh Tiny Tucker version just because I happen to like that one better. Coming up next, we've got Hello It's Me by Todd Rundren from his Something Anything album. This one went to number five. Now it was originally recorded for his first band, which I didn't know he had a first band. It was called NAS. It was the B side of their first single. Now he claimed that it is his first song he ever wrote, and it was re-recorded for this first song. Now losing out the end of the time. So here we have closing out the set of Terry Jackson version of Lemoribond. But we'll be starting things off with Don McClain's Vincent.

SPEAKER_08

Sorry,

Vincent - Don McLean

SPEAKER_08

starry night. Ain't your palate blue and gray? Look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the darkness and my soul. Shadows on the hills. Sketch the trees and the daffodils. Catch the breeze and the winter chills in colors on the snowy land. Now I understand what you tried to say to me. And how you suffered for your sanity. And how you tried to set them free. They would not listen, and they did not know how. Perhaps they'll listen now. Starry, starry night. Flaming flowers that brightly blaze. Swirling clouds in violet haze reflect the venison stars of China. Colors changing. Morning fields of amber green. Weathered faces lined up in the paint. Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand. Now I understand. What you tried to say to me, And how you suffered for your sanity, and how you tried to set them free, they would not listen, they did not know how. Perhaps they'll listen now, for they could not love you, but still your love was true. And when no hope was left in sight on that starry, starry night, you took your life as lovers often do. But I could have told you this world was never meant for one as beautiful. Portraits hung in empty holes, frameless heads on nameless walls, with eyes that watch the world and can't forget, like the strangers that you have met, the ragged men in ragged clothes, the silver thorn, a bloody rose, lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow. Now I think I know what you tried to say to me, and how you suffered for your sanity, and how you tried to set them free. They would not listen, they're not listening still. Perhaps they never will

Alone Again (Naturally) - Gilbert O'Sullivan

SPEAKER_08

a little while from now.

SPEAKER_05

I'm not feeling any less. I promise myself to treat myself a bit of a tear by toe. Climbing to the top throw myself in an estimate to make it too much with your shit to still be a church at the church where people say naturally naturally,

Delta Dawn - Tanya Tucker

SPEAKER_05

what's that flower you have on?

SPEAKER_03

Could it be a faded rose from days gone by? And did I hear you say he wasn't meeting you here today to take you to his mansion in the sky? She's forty-one and her daddy still calls her baby. And all the folks round Brownville say she's crazy. Looking for a mysterious dark hair man her younger days they called Bill Prettiest woman in the song The man of the loaded feet stood by her side as it promised her feet for his back, that's why the face of the face of that beautiful thing was the day to do this, that's fine, that's all the balls on the back of the house.

Hello It's Me - Todd Rundgren

SPEAKER_01

Maybe I think too much, but something's wrong. There's something here doesn't last too long. Maybe I shouldn't think of you as many you'll see in anything as much as I do you. I take for granted that you're always there. I take for granted that you just don't care. Sometimes I can't help seeing all the way through me.

SPEAKER_08

You know that I beautiful I'll come around to see you once in a while or five and need no reason to smile and spend the night in cash.

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks

SPEAKER_08

We've known each other since we were nine or ten. Together we've climbed hills and trees, learned of love and ABC, skinned our hearts and skinned our knees. Goodbye, my friend. It's hard to die. When all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that spring is in the air. Think of me and I'll be there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. But the hills that we climb were just seasons out of time. Goodbye, papa, please pray for me. I was the black sheep of the family. You tried to teach me right from wrong. Too much whine and too much song. Wonder how I got along. Goodbye, papa. It's hard to die when all the birds are singing. In the sky, dogs in the air. The children everywhere you see the one over there. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun, but the wine and the stone like the seasons have all gone. We had joy, we have fun, we had seasons in the sun, but the wine and the stone like the seasons have all gone. Bye, Michelle, my little one. You gave me love and helped me find the sun. Every time that I was down, You would always come around and get my feet back on the ground. Bye, Michelle, it's hard to die When all the birds are singing in the sky Now that the spring is in the air With the flowers everywhere I wish that we could both be there. We enjoy we had fun we could be starting to be enjoyed, we had fun, we could be starting, we enjoy we have fun, we had seasons in the sun, one in the stone like the seasons we have all gone. All our lives we are funny and seasons in the sun, on the hues of the climb for seasons on the sun.

SPEAKER_00

Harry Jack's Seasons in the Son, song that is quite often included on the top ten worst songs of all time. Uh I don't know if I would rank it that highly or or would it be that low? Anyway, I wouldn't rank it in the top ten there. Uh coming up next, we have uh Harry Chapin Cats in the Cradle from the Verities and Balderdash album from 1974. This one went to uh number one. After that, we're going to have Eric Carmen all by myself from number uh went to number two in 1975. Now it's interesting here that the slide guitar solo is done by a session musician named Hugh McCracken. Now he also played the guitar on Paul McCartney's second solo album that was called Ram. So another connection there. After that, we have Janice Ian from her Between the Lines album, also from 1975, the song At 17. That one climbed to number three. And we'll close out the set with Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphy from his 75 album, Blue Sky Night Thunder. That also went to number three. And I do just have to add on this one that he had actually been a member of an earlier band called The Lewis and Clark Expedition. I don't explain them, I just read them. Coming up right now, though, we've got Harry Chapin and Cats in the Cradle.

Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin

SPEAKER_05

He came to the world in the usual way, but there were planes to catch and bills to pay.

SPEAKER_08

He learned to walk while I was away, and he was talking for a new one. And as he grew, he'd say, I'm gonna be like you, Dad. You know I'm gonna be like you. And the cats and the cradle. When you're coming home, dad don't know when.

SPEAKER_06

You know we'll have a good time, man.

SPEAKER_08

But something turned in just the other day.

SPEAKER_05

He said thanks for the ball at the moment. Let's play in your team and throw. I said I'm not today. I got a lot to do. He said that's okay and then you walk away, but it's my never tip, it's it. I'm gonna be like him.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, you know I'm gonna be like him. And the cat and the cradle and the stage.

SPEAKER_06

When you comin' home, that I don't know when we'll get together then. You know we'll have a good amount.

SPEAKER_05

Well, I came from college just the other day. So much like a man, I just cat stays on the proud of you. And you sit for a while. He shook his head, and it said with a smile. What I'm feeling like that is the power of the car keys.

SPEAKER_08

See you later, can I have them free? And the cat's still a move and a man.

SPEAKER_06

When you come and hold some don't know when we get together, and you know we'll have a good time.

SPEAKER_08

I've longed since the time my son's moved away.

SPEAKER_05

Call him up just the other day. I said I'd like to see you if you don't mind. It said I'd love to die if I can find the time. You see my new job's a hassle and the kids at the flu. But it's your nice talking to you, dad.

SPEAKER_06

It's mature nice talking to you.

SPEAKER_05

And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me, he'd grown up just like me. My boy was just like me.

SPEAKER_08

The cat's in the trailer and the school. Little Ruha Man. When you're coming home, son I don't know when, but we'll get together then that we're gonna have a good time there.

All by Myself - Eric Carmen

SPEAKER_09

Sometimes I feel so insecure.

At Seventeen - Janis Ian

SPEAKER_04

In the show, in the children, the small channel gave a child surprise when we see the children. We all play the game when we dare shoot ourselves it's solitary, repenting, repenting up the corn safety, murmuring obscenities, ugly girls like me.

SPEAKER_08

It's seventeen,

Wildfire - MIchael Martin Murphy

SPEAKER_08

she comes down from Yellow Mountain on a dark flatland. She rides on a pony she named Wildfire with a whirlwind by her side on a cold Nebraska night. Busted down and stall in a blizzard he was lost.

SPEAKER_07

She ran calling one.

SPEAKER_08

She ran calling one by the dark of the moon. I planted. But there came an early snow. There's been a hoot owl, howling by my window now for six nights in a row. She's coming for me I know, and on wildfire, we're both gonna go.

SPEAKER_07

We'll be running. We're gonna be handsome.

SPEAKER_00

Carl and Wilson. And apparently Carl Irish letter Hannon had gotten hit by a car recently. And in conversation brought that up with Henry Gross. Henry also coincidentally had an Irish letter named Hannon. And for some reason, he thought that would be a great idea for a song. After that, we have the masterpiece by Gordon Lightfoot, and that is the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Nothing more needed to be said. After that, Andrew Gold and Lonely Boy from the album What's Wrong with His Picture in 1977. It went to number seven. And interestingly enough, on this one, the second verse has backing vocals by Linda Ron. I never ever knew that. Following that, we have Michael Johnson, Bluer Than Blue, from his self-titled album in 1978. It went to number 12, which is one of the lowest ones on uh this particular podcast. Sadly, he did die in his home in 2017. Uh and that home was in Minneapolis. We'll close out the set with Robert John's Sad Eyes from 1971. It went to number one, and oddly enough, the song that it knocked out of the number one spot. They'd been there for six weeks, and that was The Knack with My Sharona. First, we have Henry Gross with Shannon.

Shannon - Henry Gross

SPEAKER_08

Another days at end. Things will get better again.

SPEAKER_06

Somehow she's keeping it all inside her.

SPEAKER_08

Finally, the tears will arise.

SPEAKER_06

And I know that somewhere tonight. She knows how much we miss her.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon LIghtfoot

SPEAKER_08

The lake it is said never gives up for dead when the skies of November turn gloomy. With a load of iron ore, twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald wait empty. That good ship and true was a phone to be chewed when the gales of November came early. The ship was the pride of the American sight, coming back from Sunville in Wisconsin. As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most. With the crew and good captain Well season, concluding some terms with a couple of steel furls when they left fully loaded for Cleveland. Then later that night, when the ship's bell rang, could it be the north wind they'd been failing? The wind and the wires made a tattletale sound, and the wave broke over the railing And every man knew as the captain did too. The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait when the gales of November came slashing. When afternoon came it was freeze and rain In the face of a hurricane West Wind When supper time came the old cook came on deck saying, Fellas, it's too rough to feed you at 7 p.m. the main hatch we gave in He said, Fellas, it's been good to know you The captain wired in, he had water coming in, and the good ship and crew was in peril. Later that night when his lights went out of sight, came the wreck of the emblem Fitzgerald Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the whirls turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they'd have made whitefish pay if they'd put fifteen more miles behind her They might have split up or they might have capsized, they may have groved deep into the water, and all that remains is the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters Lake Eron Roll Superior sings in the rooms of her ice water mansion. Oh Michigan steams like a young man's dreams, the islands and bays are for sportsmen, and farther below Lake Ontario takes in what Lake Erie can send her. The iron boats go as the mariners all go with the gales of November. Remember In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed in the Maritime Sailors Cathedral The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the chippewa on down of the big lake they call Gitchumi Superior they said never gives up or dead when the gales of November come early

Lonely Boy - Anderew Gold

SPEAKER_08

He was born on a summer day, nineteen fifty one And with the slap of a hand he had landed as an only son His mother and father said, What a lovely boy We'll teach him what we learned Oh yes, just what we learned We'll dress him up warmly and we'll send him to school It'll teach him how to fight to be nobody's fool Oh what I know it boy Oh what I know before Oh what I'm gonna In the summer of 53 His mother brought him a sister She told him we must attend to her need She's so much younger than you Well he ran down the hall and he cried Oh how could his parents have lied When they said he was the only son He thought he was the only one Oh by the only boy Oh by the only boy Oh by the only boy She left home on a winter day 1969 And he hoped to find all the love he had lost in that earlier time Well his sister grew up and she married a man She gave her a son Oh yes it's a lovely son They dressed him up worn lift They stand in the school They taught him how to fight the bite of school Oh bother boy Oh but the name Oh the name Oh the name of the little

SPEAKER_00

Robert John with sad eyes. Well, we're gonna wrap up this podcast here once again. That's Open O'Vane, the most depressing hits of the 1970s. I'm Lauren. Um I'd like to say thank you to all the folks that were involved in this. Most uh personally, uh Lance Van Sterman, my brother, who uh has always kind of kept faith with me, and I appreciate that. Also the contributors uh that contributed songs or ideas for this podcast, uh Bruce Van Dell, uh Todd Bonshire, uh Pat Crite Low, and I know I'm missing people, and I'm sorry. Uh uh use the uh email to complain to me, and I'll try to get you next time. Um speaking of the email, that's liner note61 at gmail.com. We've also got a website up and running, linernote.com I will be working on the Facebook page. I don't have that one done yet. It's on my list of things to do though, I swear. The next podcast should be coming up within the next month or two. I'll be sure to post something on my Facebook page about it. Hope you guys will subscribe and listen. I hope you guys have had a good time. Like I say, using email for comments, criticisms, suggestions, anything like that. Now, to play you out, we're gonna have uh John McLean's American Pie from 1971. And of course we know it's about Buddy Holly. However, there have been numerous, numerous uh ideas, controversies about who all these other quote-unquote people are in the song, and I'm not even gonna get into that, because there's like eight million of them. Now, if you want to hear that from the man himself, there is a documentary out there called The Day the Music Died, the story of Don McLean's American Pie, and it does are Don McLean. So uh I think if anybody would know what it is document, it would be him. So uh yes, I'm I'm feeling for paramount now if only somebody anyway, we know that this is about Buddy Holly now for me. I'm too young for this to represent Buddy Holly for me. I think he was decided to one and it's from Bob from his 2013 album. And it's called Roll on John. I swear that probably half the times I listen to it, I end up crying. So it fits right in with our happy-go-lucky soundtrack here. But uh, give it a listen. I think that you'll like it. Once again, thank you all for tuning in, and we'll chat with you soon.

American Pie - Don McLean

SPEAKER_08

Long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance, that I could make those people dance, and maybe they'd be happy for a while. But February made me shiver with every paper I'd deliver, with bad news on the doorstep, that I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed pride, but something touched me deep inside that day. So by Miss American pie, drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry. And then good old boys would drink whiskey and wry, singing, This'll be the day that I die, this'll be the day that I die. Did you write the book of love? And do you have faith in God above? Faith the Bible tells you so. How do you believe in rock and roll? Can you do to save your mortal soul? Can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you're in love with him, cause I saw you dancing in the gym. You both kicked off the shoes. And I dig those ribbon and blue. With a pink carnation and a pickup truck. But I knew I was out of luck for the day. The muse didn't die. I started singing by Mr. Merrick and I drove my chevy to the levit, but the levit was dry. Them good old boys were drinking whiskey and ride. Singin' this will be the day that I die. This will be the day that I died. Now for ten years we've been on our own. Fat on a rolling stone. But that's not how it used to be. When the jesters sang for the king and queen in a coat, you borrowed from James Dean and a voice. From you and me. Oh, and while the king was looking down, the jester stole his horny crown. The court room was a germ. Now burning was returned. And while any read a book of mark, the quartet practiced in the park. And we stand in the dark today. The music died. We would sing by the mark. I don't agree to the levit, but the left it was die. And good old boys drinking, whiskey and ride. This will be the day that I die. This will be the day that I die. Help, just help during the summer swell. The birds flew off with a fallout shelter. Eight miles high on the fall and fell. And foul on the grass. The players tried for a forward pass with a gesture on the sideline in a cast. Now the halftime air was a sweet perfume while the sergeants played a marching tune. We all got up to dance. The marching band refused to heal. Do you recall a cut defield today? We start by step, never die. Oh, and there we were all in one place. A generation lost wait, with no time left to start again. So come on, Jack, be nimble, Jack, be quick. Jack flashed down a candlestick up. Fire of the devil's own friend. Oh, after I watched him on the stage, my hands were clenched in front of the wrap. Going to warn a bell. And the old boy take it with me and by taking this will be the day that I died. This will be the day that I died. I met a girl who sang the blues, and I asked her for some happy news. But she just smiled and turned away. I went down to the sacred store where I'd heard the music years before, but the men there said the music wouldn't play.
